Anyone who works out on a regular basis has at one time or another experienced either over-training, boredom or a plateau in their training. These can be difficult times to push through and for as many reasons there are for plateaus, there are as many ways to get out of them. Changing the intensity of your workouts is an age old way to beat a plateau, as is variation. Having a good variety of exercise routines is a great way to beat boredom and more importantly, variety is a way of insuring you that you are not overworking any one set of muscle groups. This is where Pilates steps in. Because of Pilates use of your entire body and its ability to suit the practitioner’s abilities and level of expertise, Pilates can be just the game changer you need when busting out of an exercise hump. Pilates is holistic, meaning it uses every muscle group in your body in a synergistic and complete way. Too much strength training? Try the elongating effect of Pilates. Too much running? Pilates works your body in multiple planes, not just one. The functionality of Pilates makes it the perfect exercise to compliment any exercise you are already doing. My favorite moments are when my clients come in and tell me that they use Pilates principles when they are at the gym or just taking a walk. That to me is when Pilates is best, when it seeps into the rest of your life and makes a difference in how you feel every day. Variety is indeed the spice of life and Pilates may give you the boost you need to get yourself out of your exercise rut.
